FIONNA WRITE UP

I know this is a bit late, but I figured I should get this write up done before I get too busy.  I will also be adding to this as I swap out or update accessories.  For those of you who are making a Fionna costume and are looking for some tips, here are some things that I did:

STEP ONE: I bought the items I could

-wig-
I look terrible in light blonde wigs. I am brunette and have the complexion for one. So trying to find a blonde wig, I went for one with a darker tone. The one I have is actually the wig advertised for Karina Lyle (Tiger & Bunny). This one is just about the right length for me since most of it is going under the hat.

- Shirt-
I looked for a teal shirt specifically. It was difficult to find one that was ¾ sleeves so I bought a full length sleeve and tucked it in to where I needed it. Look for a long sleeve basic stretch cotton shirt in teal. A scoop or v-neck could work. There are numerous options on Ebay so I recommend looking around and finding one that works for you!

EDIT: The exact Ebay vendor I bought the shirt from is themogan myworld.ebay.com/themogan?_trk…

- Skirt-
I went the American Apparel route. The exact skirt is the Interlock Mini Skirt in Lapis. The shirt hangs over so it covers the interlock section. However, this one comes with a warning. This IS a mini skirt and it is freaking SHORT. I can get away with this because I am 5'1" and even then I have to keep an eye on it. You might want to try one on to see if you're comfortable with it and/or if it works for you.

-Socks-
I addressed this one before but I also bought these from American Apparel. They are currently unavailable, but I purchased the stripe thigh high socks in white and baby blue. There is a third stripe, so it isn't a perfect match, but I made it work by tucking it in and hiding the third stripe.

-Shoes-
Black mary janes are rather abundant. I went with a heel just because I thought those shoes were cute, and I'm so short I tend to look like a dwarf when I'm not in heels...

STEP TWO: Make the things I can't buy

- hat-  (white fleece, stuffing, cardboard, wire, velcro)
I found a basic beanie pattern and started with that. I compared it against existing patternss for Finn hats and created my own pattern to fit my own head. That was the bottom layer. The ears were created, stuffed and attached to that. A combination of cardboard and wire was used to get them to stand up straight. Then I added a cover layer. There is a moderate level of stuffing between to the two layers to give it shape and to help support the ears. It seems to have worked because I can head bang in that hat and the ears don't flop.

However, my one disclaimer is that the pattern isn't perfect. It got a little messy working around the ears, so it's a little lopsided. :) Also, it's attached with velcro, so you will see the overlap of fabrics under the chin.

-back pack- (fleece, stuffing, craft foam, velcro)
I made this, somehow or other. It's a functional back pack, but I couldn't get it to puff out and have the opening in the middle. So instead, I made a dome, enforced with craft foam and put the opening at the top. The straps are very puffy because I essentially made a tube of fabric and stuffed it. If you need more detail than that, let me know. The pattern is fitted to my frame specifically, so on it's own, the base is fairly small.

-Cake- (fleece, styrofoam, stuffing, craft foam,
I decided to go with morning star mode Cake because I hadn't seen it done before. I bought a 12" styrofoam ball to used as a base and designed the ball section as a beach ball. I had to carefully mark out where each spike would go and each spike was stuffed and sewn separately and then hand sewn onto the main body. The tricky part is knowing which ones overlap with the spots. The eyes are fleece like the body and also created separately and sewn on. The nose I had trouble with getting the shape right so I made a base from craft foam and covered that in fabric. The tale was pretty easy after all those darn spikes.

Originally I was going to remove the styrofoam ball and stuff it, but it was so large it was difficult to keep it's shape so the styrofoam ball was sewn in. I also added a loop of floss to act as a handle so I wouldn't have to carry Cake by her tail. All things said, the design was improvised to a fair degree. If you have specific questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Okay, I think that's everything. Hopefully all of you aspiring Fionnas find this of some use. :)

ON MAKE UP:

Makeup on Fionna is light and minimal at best. I only use coverup and foundation to even out my tone (I have lots of freckles!), eyeliner to highlight the eyes and tinted lip gloss. I do wear blue contacts for the costume, which is very obvious in closeups.

I do have dark eyebrows and sometimes I am better at tinting them than others. I run a glue stick over my eyebrows (gross, right?) and then cover it with yellow/gold eyeshadow. A much smarter friend uses eyelash glue as a base. Again, do what works for you. :)

And voila, you are ready to adventure!

Is pretty helpful, thanks! Would you consider commissioning a Fionna hat?
